Young man in hospital after being attacked in the street in Longsight

A young man was attacked in the street in south Manchester.

Police and paramedics were called to Stockport Road in Longsight at around 5.15pm on Wednesday (March 4) following reports of an assault.

A man was taken to hospital, police said.

"A 24-year-old man was taken to hospital with a wound to the head after he was attacked by a group of men," a spokesman for the force said.

Photos shared with the Manchester Evening News showed police cars and ambulances on the busy road.

Officers were also seen scouring a nearby alley.

Residents and shop owners told the M.E.N. there were around eight police cars at the scene.

A force helicopter was also seen circling the area.

One person, who asked not to be named, said police arrived very quickly.

"We heard lots of police sirens and they closed the road off right away," they said.

Police have not yet confirmed if any arrests have been made - or if the man remains in hospital.
