Young man dies at Scots wind farm construction site sparking police and safety probe

A police investigation has been launched after a young man tragically died at a construction site in Shetland.

The alarm was raised at around 10.15am on Sunday June 5, following reports a 23-year-old had been injured in an industrial accident.

Police and paramedics raced to the scene in the Upper Kergord area - 15 miles north of Lerwick - but the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Investigators say enquiries to determine the circumstances remain ongoing and that the Health and Safety Executive will be notified.

The tragic incident is understood to have happened at a construction site for a wind farm.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of a 23-year-old man having been injured on a construction site in the Upper Kergord area of Shetland, around 10.15am on Sunday, 5 June, 2022.

“Emergency services attended, however, the man died at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and the Health and Safety Executive will be informed in due course.”

A BAM Nuttall spokesman said: "We can confirm an incident at our Viking Windfarm project site on Shetland, today, has resulted in the tragic fatality of a colleague.

"Our condolences are with their family, and support is being made available to them and to members of the team.

"An investigation is under way and we're working closely with our client and the authorities."

SSE Renewables head of onshore projects Derek Hastings said: "We are devastated by today's news and our thoughts and condolences are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the young man who tragically died.

"We are working closely with BAM Nuttall and the relevant authorities to understand what happened."
