Young man dies after getting into difficulty at waterfall near Pontneddfechan

Police have confirmed that a 20-year-old man who got into difficulty near a Welsh waterfall has died in hospital.

Emergency services were called to reports of the young man struggling in the water at around 4.40pm on Wednesday, July 24, at Pontneddfechan, Glynneath.

Dyfed-Powys Police attended the scene along with fire crews from Swansea and Glynneath and paramedics. The Air Ambulance and Water Rescue Unit were also at the scene.

Emergency services left the scene at around 7pm and the man, who is from Tonypandy, was taken to hospital by road.

He died at University Hospital of Wales on Thursday, July 25.

A spokeswoman from Dyfed-Powys Police said: "Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a man in difficulty in the water at Pontneathvaughan (Pontneddfechan), Glynneath, on Wednesday, July 24. Police attended along with the fire service and paramedics.

"The 20-year-old man was taken to hospital but sadly died on Thursday, July 25. There are no suspicious circumstances to his death. His next of kin and HM Coroner are aware."

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they assisted an ambulance crew in recovering a male casualty using a stretcher and rescue lines.

A spokesman from Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called on Wednesday, July 24, at approximately 4.40pm to reports of a person needing medical assistance near Glynneath.

"We responded with one ambulance, a crew of our community first responders, four vehicles of our hazardous area response team and we were supported by the Wales Air Ambulance and the fire and rescue service.

"One patient was transported by road ambulance to University Hospital Of Wales, Cardiff.”
