Young man, 21, found dead on busy Scots road as probe launched

A young man man has died on an East Ayrshire carriageway as police appeal for information.

Officers were called to the A77 northbound near the Bellfield Interchange in Kilmarnock in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The alarm was raised just before 1am following reports of a man on the carriageway.

Police rushed to the scene where a 21-year-old man was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

The road was closed for around six hours.

Police on Sunday morning told the Record that the A77 has since re-opened to motorists.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Officers are urging anyone with information related to the tragic incident to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Record: "We received reports of a man on the A77 carriageway near to the Bellfield Interchange north bound at Kilmarnock, around 12.50am on Saturday, July 31.

"Officers attended and a 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The road was closed for around six hours and has since re-opened.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"Anyone with information related to the incident should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0260 of July 31."
