Young long jumper Shaili Singh finishes third in Japan

NEW DELHI: Talented Indian youngster Shaili Singh showcased her potential with a commendable performance, finishing third in the women's long jump event at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix on Sunday.

The 19-year-old athlete achieved a notable jump of 6.65m in the first round, which remained her best throughout the World Athletics Continental Tour gold level competition. Although it fell 11 cm short of her personal best, her effort was conducted with a wind speed of +2.1 m/s, slightly exceeding the permissible limit of +2.0 m/s.

Shaili dominated the event, leading the competition until the third round. However, Maryse Luzolo of Germany claimed the gold medal with a jump of 6.79m, while Brooke Buschkuel of Australia secured second place with an effort of 6.77m.

This event marked Shaili's debut at the senior level in a significant international outdoor competition. Earlier in 2021, she won a silver medal in the World U-20 Athletics Championships, recording a jump of 6.59m.

In April of the same year, Shaili achieved a remarkable feat by leaping 6.76m, the second-longest long jump ever recorded by an Indian athlete. This outstanding performance led to her securing a gold medal at the Indian Grand Prix.

During the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships held in Nur-Sultan in February, Shaili finished fifth, demonstrating her potential with a jump of 6.27m.

With her consistent progress and promising performances, Shaili Singh continues to impress and showcases her potential to make a mark in the world of athletics.
