Two of Leeds United’s finest young talents are drawing admiring glances from further afield as the transfer market starts booting into life.
Charlie Cresswell and Sam Greenwood led United’s charge to the Premier League 2 Division Two championship this season.
The pair have now been named on an eight-man shortlist for overall Premier League 2 Player of the Season.
Cresswell’s nomination read: “The centre-back was integral as Leeds United won the Premier League 2 Division Two title in their debut season, keeping eight clean sheets and scoring twice in 21 appearances as they secured promotion to Division One.
“He also made his senior debut as he started in the EFL Cup defeat against Hull City in September.”
While on Greenwood, Premier League said: “Following a summer move from Arsenal, the striker went on to claim the PL2 Player of the Month award for September and his 12 goals in 18 matches helped Leeds win the Division Two title.
“The 19-year-old made his first senior appearance in a third-round FA Cup loss to Crawley Town in January, and has also featured in a Premier League matchday squad.”
The nominations show the Premier League and those outside Thorp Arch can see the quality in this Whites pair from further afield.
It remains to be seen whether Adam Underwood, Victor Orta and Marcelo Bielsa decide to keep the pair close to home next term or send them out on loan for experience.
Louie Barry, Liam Delap, Connor McBride, Cole Palmer, Aaron Ramsey and Shola Shoretire are also included on a shortlist formed from PL2 coaches nominating the best opposition performances they had seen through the season.
The winner will be decided by the Premier League Football Development Panel next week.
