Young lads rescued by helicopter and lifeboat after getting into difficulty swimming in 'rough conditions' in Howth

Three young lads were rescued by a combined lifeboat and helicopter effort after getting into difficulty swimming in Howth.

One of the group reportedly got into difficulty swimming in what an RNLI spokesperson described as "difficult conditions".

The Howth RNLI launched their All Weather Lifeboat just after 4pm and they raced to the scene just past the Bailey lighthouse.

A source who witnessed the scene told Dublin Live that one of the pair tried to jump in and help his friend, but quickly rushed back to the rocks.

Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 116 was deployed and their winchman was sent down to bring the casualties on board.

An RNLI spokesperson told Dublin Live: "Howth RNLI launched their All Weather Lifeboat this afternoon, at approximately 4.10pm to results of a person in the water at Lion’s Head (just past the Bailey).

"Conditions on scene were rough with a two to three metre rolling swell. The station did not launch the inshore lifeboat due to the difficult conditions.

"As they came on scene they were directed further up the shore by people standing nearby and they saw the casualty on the rocks and in need of assistance.

"The Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 sent down their winchman and brought the casualty on board. Howth Coast Guard also attended on shore."
