Young student slams Unionist party leader during debate about the Irish Language Act in Northern Ireland

A young Irish student has slammed the Unionist leader Jim Allister during a debate on the Irish Language Act in Northern Ireland.

Aine Quinn's comments on the controversial act in Northern Ireland were highly praised after she asked the leader of the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) to "go hand in hand" with nationalists on BBC Northern Ireland's 'The Top Table'.

The show brings young people on to "face down" politicians in a debate on current affairs.

Allister claimed the Irish Language Act will be used as a weapon to 'de-Britishise' Northern Ireland.

Aine Quinn, member of Ógra Shinn Féin, puts down Jim Allister on BBC The Top Table (BBC NI)

Quinn, 20, who is a member of Ogra Shinn Fein responded to his comments saying: "I have no idea what has it in your brain that this idea that the Irish language is going to be radicalized and is going to affect your Britishness.

"Scotland has a standalone Scottish Act. The Welsh have a standalone Act for the language in Wales.

"It's no threat to the Union now. It's no threat to the so called Britishness (of Northern Ireland).

"It is an issue of identity. I identify as Irish, you identify as British.

"And I think in this day and age, 20 years on from the Good Friday Agreement we can go hand in hand and be able to live in a civil society where we can speak the language of our native tongue."

The young activists comments were praised online for their "strength and energy".

One listener said: "The future of Irish politics right there! No problem to her at all to continue to get her point across with the interruptions coming up both in front and from behind her."

Another said: "People should have the choice... you go girl."
