Young Irish striker Calum Kavanagh signs professional contract with Middlesbrough

Young Irish striker Calum Kavanagh has signed his first professional contract with Middlesbrough.

The 17-year-old, son of former Ireland and Boro midfielder Graham Kavanagh, has impressed in the Academy ranks and his reward is a three-year professional deal.

Middlesbrough are said to be delighted to secure his long-term future after reported interest in the youngster from Arsenal, Chelsea and Celtic.

Earlier this month, Kavanagh scored twice for Boro's U-18s in a 3-0 win over Leeds United.

“He’s shown great application and has a real good work ethic. He has a long way to go and a lot to learn, but this is another step on the ladder for him and his continued development.”

Kavanagh has represented Ireland at various underage levels, including scoring a goal in Under-17 European Championship qualifying.
