Young hurlers hailed heroes after saving two kids struggling in sea

Four young hurlers have been labelled local heroes after saving two children who were struggling at sea.

Minor players from the Ruairi Og Cushendall club in Co Antrim spotted two kids, a boy and girl, struggling to swim, and jumped to their rescue after seeing that their father was attempting to help them.

Teenagers Michael Quinn, Josh Schnell, Shane McKenna and Niall Óg McGuigan were on White Park Bay beach when they noticed the two young children in danger.

Shane and Niall Óg ran into the sea to rescue the small boy, while Josh and Michael safely brought the father and daughter to safety.

The Antrim club have paid tribute to the youths and the minor management decided to honour the players as a token of respect.

Each player has been given a brand new hurl, grip and a sliotar as recognition for their bravery.

Adrian McNaughton, Juvenile Chairperson of Ruairí Óg said, “These four young men have shown incredible bravery and we are so proud of them.  We live in a beautiful coastal community where we all look out for one another.

"The GAA has been in an important and life-saving partnership with the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea for the past few years.

"Both organisations have been working closely together to raise awareness of water safety and give our players and supporters the knowledge and the tools to save lives.

"These four young men represent the best of our community and we are so proud of them for their bravery. We all have a role to play in keeping everyone safe this summer on the water and our local lifeboat station, Red Bay RNLI, may have some new volunteers joining them soon."
