Young homeless man found dead on city street in Dublin

A young homeless man was found dead on a city street outside council offices on Tuesday morning.

The body of the local man, who was in his late 20s or early-30s, was discovered outside the Civic Offices in Dublin city centre.

It is believed he had been sleeping rough in the capital in recent weeks.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after Gardai and emergency services rushed to the Wood Quay area at around 7am.

The body of the man was removed to Dublin City Morgue where a post-mortem took place Tuesday evening.

Gardai said that they are continuing to investigate “all circumstances surrounding the unexplained death” with the post-mortem determining the course of the investigation.

Brian McLoughlin of Inner City Helping Homeless said that this was yet another tragic death on the streets of Ireland that happened close to an overnight hostel.

He said: “The victim is believed to be a male in his late 20s/early 30s and had engaged in homeless services previously.

“Efforts are now being made to track down the man’s family first before any more information is released about him.”

He continued: “On behalf of everyone in ICHH we want to offer our deepest sympathies to the man, his family and friends.

“Deaths on our streets are becoming too frequent and we cannot become immune to deaths of homeless people who need safe and secure accommodation with proper wrap around supports.

“These deaths cannot be allowed to become normalised, every human life counts.

“Many people living on the streets also develop underlying health issues so we have grave concerns for adults and children that are homeless as coronavirus takes a grip on the country.”

Tony Walsh, the founder and CEO of the Feed Our Homeless charity said: “Deaths on our streets are starting to become normalised.

“There have being far too many deaths of homeless people on our streets.

“There is an urgent need for safe and secure accommodation with proper wrap-around supports to help reduce the numbers of homeless people who are experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough on our streets.

“There is simply not enough being done by the relevant authorities to ensure emergency state funded hostels around the city are being made safer, particularly at night.

“It’s very sad when you hear from homeless people who are experiencing homelessness and sleeping rough on our streets on daily and nightly basis they feel safer sleeping on the streets rather than sleep in the emergency state funded hostels due to them being unsafe.

“There is real need for emergency hostels to be made safer to help reduce the numbers of homeless people in our streets and more importantly to help prevent any more deaths on our streets.”
