Young farmer airlifted to hospital after freak incident sees silage bale fall on top of him

A farmer had to be airlifted to hospital after a freak incident saw him become trapped under a bale of silage.

A bale can weigh anything above 12.5kg, with some going as far as 540kg. The Agriculture and Food Development Authority say that the average weight of a bale is 200-240kg.

Local media report that the man remains in University Hospital Cork on Wednesday afternoon.

The Limerick Leader says that the farmer, aged in his 30s, was patching a bale of silage onto a trailer when one appeared to roll back and fall on top of him.

The publication add that emergency services were called immediately and it is believed that he sustained a broken leg and a cut to the face.

An air ambulance was called to the incident moments after it took place in Kilteely, Limerick on Tuesday.

The Irish Mirror has contacted gardai for comment.

Only last week, a man died after a farming incident in Antrim.

And last month, another incident saw a man in Galway killed after a workplace accident on a farm.
