Young fan with brain tumour receives amazing Christmas gift from Notts County

A young Notts County supporter who is spending the festive season in Queen’s Medical Centre has been given the gift of a lifetime by his club.

Larsen Roberts was visited by Magpies manager Neal Ardley and several players, including club captain Michael Doyle, when Notts conducted their annual Christmas visit to the children’s wards last week.

And Larsen, who is receiving chemotherapy to treat a brain tumour, made such an impression on the squad that he has been invited to be their lucky matchday mascot when Dover Athletic visit Meadow Lane on   January 18.

“The players loved meeting him and hearing how our fixture against Cambridge United was the first football match he ever attended.

“Unfortunately, due to his illness, he’s been unable to come back since.

“But we’re delighted he’ll be making his return to Meadow Lane in January, when he’ll meet up with the players once again in the changing rooms before leading them out on to the pitch.

“We visit QMC every Christmas and Easter and we’re always inspired by the children and families we meet.

“On behalf of the club I’d like to say a huge thank you to the nurses on the children’s ward for their support, and also to our fans who donate so many lovely gifts for us to pass on to those unfortunate enough to be spending Christmas in hospital.”

Larsen’s dad, Lyndon, was hugely appreciative of the gesture.

“Being visited by Neal and the players really brightened up our, and Larsen’s, day - and for the club to offer him this opportunity is just the icing on the cake,” he said.

“It’s obviously been a very tough time for us and our son so this gesture means the world to us.

“Larsen bowled us over with his spirit, courage and enthusiasm,” said Alice Kelk, Notts’ Supporter Liaison Officer. “We’re all hugely looking forward to what will be a very memorable day.”
