Young family left 'devastated' after 'stolen' car ploughs into kitchen while mum and kids slept upstairs

A Stockport mother has been left devastated after a car smashed into her home in the early hours of the morning while her family slept upstairs.

The woman, who wishes to stay anonymous, told the Manchester Evening News her house has been 'destroyed'.

She said the only silver lining was that neither her, her partner, or two children were in the room the car ploughed into.

“We were sleeping and we heard a big bang,” the IT worker recalled.

“We did not know what it was, [when] we looked outside and there was a car crashed into the house.

“The police said the car was stolen and they crashed into the house but the lads took off.”

The incident, on Churchgate, near Stockport town centre, happened at around 1am today (Tuesday), eyewitnesses say.

Having been advised to evacuate the property, the family stayed with friends overnight — but this is not an option long-term due to work commitments.

That leaves the mother, who has two children aged seven and five, few options, she says.

“The police said the estate agencies should find another solution for us but reportedly they have nothing for us,” she added. “They told us to find other accommodation which is hard to do with very short notice.”

“The council are analysing our request [for temporary housing], they said they will be in touch.

“We are trying to see if the estate agency can do something for us.”

The Manchester Evening News understands discussions are ongoing between the agency, landlord, and tenants over arranging suitable alternative accommodation.

Describing the incident as ‘shocking’, the 41-year-old woman said she could not believe what had happened.

“It’s devastating. It is not something you expect to live through in your life.

“It is something from the movies. It is very stressful for us and the kids. It’s not nice to be evacuated in the middle of the night,” she said.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Shortly before 2.30am this morning (Tuesday 13 July 2021), officers were on patrol in Stockport when a stolen car went past at speed in the opposite direction.

"The car then collided with a house on Churchgate Mill, Lavenders Brow, and the occupants of the vehicle off made off before police arrived.

"There are no reported injuries. However, there is extensive damage to the property.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
