Young Everton attacker completes continental transfer

Bassala Sambou has completed his move from Everton to Dutch club Fortuna Sittard.

The 21-year-old striker's contract at Goodison Park had expired but the Blues will still receive what is expected to be a relatively nominal financial windfall from his exit in the shape of FIFA Training Compensation because he is under 24 years of age.

There was a degree of excitement when Everton lured the then teenage Sambou from Coventry City back in 2016.

The Hannover-born youngster, had netted 25 goals for the Sky Blues at youth level and looking to develop the player in his reserve team set-up, David Unsworth told evertonfc.com: “I tracked his progress over the whole of last season and he'll be a quality player to take into the Under-21 group.

“I believe he'll be a Premier League player in the future.”

Ultimately, Sambou never made a first team appearance for Everton but this move will provide him with the prospect of top flight football in the Netherlands with Fortuna – who the Blues defeated in the quarter-finals on their way to victory in the 1984/85 European Cup Winners' Cup – finishing 15 in the Eredivisie last season and narrowly avoiding relegation by a single point in what was their first campaign back among the big boys for 16 years.

Sambou helped Everton's Under-23s to claim two Premier League 2 Division 1 titles in three seasons, netting nine times in 22 outings for them last term while also registering twice in three Checkatrade Trophy matches.
