Young entrepreneur who set up shop in his bedroom in Manchester after dropping out of uni to take up chair on Dragon's Den - he'll make history on the BBC show

Manchester entrepreneur Steven Bartlett has been snapped up by Dragon's Den - and he's making history.

The Social Chain CEO will replace Tej Lalvani following his exit and will be the youngest ever dragon to appear on the BBC series.

Steven, 28, will star alongside Peter Jones, Deborah Meaden, Touker Suleyman and Sara Davies when the show returns for series 19.

He revealed the news on Instagram alongside a 'fire breathing' video of him transforming into a dragon.

He wrote alongside the clip: "ANNOUNCEMENT. NEW ERA, NEW DRAGON. BBC ONE, SERIES 19."

Steven has said of his new gig: "I’ve been watching Dragons’ Den since I was 12 years old – it was my first window into the real world of business and investing.

"It’s a tremendous honour to join the Den, hopefully representing a new generation of entrepreneurs, inspiring young and specifically under-represented entrepreneurs to follow in my footsteps."

Steven sent up social media marketing agency The Social Chain from his bedroom in Manchester after dropping out of university at 22.

Five years on, and taking his company public aged 27, the current market valuation for his company is now more than £300m.

He also released his debut book - Happy Sexy Millionaire - in March.

Sarah Clay, the BBC’s commissioning editor for entertainment, said: "As well as being our youngest ever Dragon, Steven’s unique approach to business will bring a whole new dynamic to the Den.

"He brings a wealth of experience from the social media, technological and brand building worlds. I’m so excited to see him in the next series."

Filming for the new series, featuring Steven, is set to begin this summer.

Dragons’ Den is currently airing on BBC One on Thursdays at 8pm and is also available on BBC iPlayer.
