Young Dundee girl's special BBC One Show surprise for her amazing fundraising efforts

A young Dundee girl got the surprise of her life on the BBC’s One Show last night.

Mega fundraiser, Catherine Letford, was set up by her family, the TV show and bosses at V&A Dundee.

They were joined by dozens of people across Scotland and the UK who have been helped by the astonishing nine-year-old.

The youngster thought she was helping film a new Christmas trailer at the museum.

Instead, One Show bosses had lined up her favourite CBBC presenter, Alishea, to surprise her.

The star jumped out of a huge present to thank Catherine on behalf of all those she has helped.

A line-up of people paying their own tributes was then shown on a huge TV as Catherine looked on, sobbing her eyes out.

Speaking on the show, her super-proud mum, Dawn-Marie, said: “I think Catherine deserves a One Show big thank you because she always wants to help others and always thinks of other people before herself.”

David Dorward MBE, founder of Dundee Bairns, that provides free meals and support to children across Tayside said “Catherine has raised over £5,000 for us just in the space of two years.

“It’s quite inspiring to see somebody so young give up so much of their own time to raise money to help other children.”

Catherine was described as a prolific fundraiser on the show after making ‘thousands of pounds for charities doing everything from cycling to walking long distances in a kilt.’

During lockdown she also sent letters and drawings to dozens of care home residents across the UK.

This Christmas she is making cards and decorations to also raise money.

A V&A Dundee spokesperson said: "V&A Dundee was delighted to be involved in the One Big Thankyou surprise for Catherine organised by The One Show.

"It was a lot of fun setting up and really very special to see Catherine’s reaction when her friends and family joined in to say thank you for all her hard work fundraising and helping others.

"Catherine has shown extraordinary kindness and generosity to those around her and this wonderful surprise was hugely deserved."
