Young Dublin man rushed to hospital after serious incident at popular beach

A young Dublin surfing enthusiast has been hospitalised after getting into difficulty in the sea.

It’s understood the man, aged in his 20s, got into trouble while surfing at around midday yesterday in Lahinch, Co Clare.

The incident happened outside the official bathing area beyond the end of the prom.

When the alarm was raised, the National Ambulance Service dispatched local paramedics as well as a rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis to the scene.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also requested to mobilise personnel to the scene of incident.

The man was brought ashore and treated on the beach by paramedics assisted by Clare County Council lifeguards and later taken to the nearby lifeguard station until ambulance paramedics arrived.

A number of off-duty firefighter/paramedics from Donnybrook Fire Station in Dublin, who had been in the area at the time, rescued the man from the water.

They treated and stabilised him until NAS paramedics arrived.

Taking to social media, Donnybrook Fire Station in Dublin confirmed that some of its members assisted in the rescue.

"We are very proud of our colleagues on A watch Donnybrook fire station who were involved in the rescue of this lucky man.

"They just happened to be visiting the area at the time. Well done guys and all the other emergency services involved," they said.
