Young Dublin camogie players recreate viral communion day photo four years on after finally making confirmation

A group of young Dublin camogie players have recreated a viral photo of their communion day four years apart after finally making their confirmation.

While the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to the girls celebrating the milestone event, this week it was third time lucky after they finally got to celebrate the day following the lifting of restrictions.

And they hurlers recreated the iconic photo which went viral four years ago after being shared on The Late Late Show, dubbed the 'White Haka'.

The GAA mad girls all play on the same team for Craobh Chiarain in Donnycarney, Dublin and made their confirmation in St. Brigid's Church in Killester.

Mother of one of the girls Michelle La Grue said the girls were initially "devastated" when the day was called off due to COVID, however they were finally able to make their confirmation this month after it was rescheduled three times.

Speaking about the day Michelle said: "It was lovely. Families were split up so they could only have their mum, their dad and their sponsor.

"Everybody wore masks and practiced social distancing so third time's the charm."

"We're so proud of them because they're such a small class and 14 of them now on the team. They're still playing and still loving it."

"They're such a special little group because you don't tend to get that many kids in one class all on the same team"

Now all grown up the girls can be seen in the remake photo, this time all practicing social distancing and wearing masks.

Michelle added that the day was a much needed boost to the girls who have had a tough year dealing with not being able to play sport due to COVID-19.

She said: "They're a formidable team and this year really would have been their year because they started off so well and had so many wins so they would have done so well."

Michelle says her daughter Leah Curley and her teammates have still been able to train over zoom and are looking forward to getting back to playing properly in the new year once the pandemic dies down.
