A young man told cops he “couldn’t remember how much he had to drink” when he was caught drink-driving.
Luke Jack, 20, was almost five times the legal drink-drive limit when police pulled him over in Renfrew Road on November 7.
Procurator fiscal depute Ian Mathieson told Paisley Sheriff Court: “The incident took place shortly after midnight on November 7, 2021.
“Police were on the M8 near to junction 24 when they observed a black Smart Car driving erratically.
“The car was weaving between lanes and almost collided with the central reservation.
“Police approached and observed the accused within the car.
“They stopped the car due to the manner in which it was being driven.
“The accused told the police officers that he ‘couldn’t remember how much he had to drink.’
“Officers could smell alcohol on the accused’s breath, his speech was slurred and his eyes were glazed.
“At twenty past midnight, the accused was placed under arrest and taken to Greenock police station where he provided two specimens of breath which provided a reading of 98mg.
“He made no reply to caution and charge.”

Jack’s defence agent said: “There never really is a good explanation for drink-driving and there isn’t one here either.
“Mr Jack is a third year business student at the University of Strathclyde.
“He is apologetic for his actions.”
On sentencing Jack of, Octavia Terrace in Greenock, Sheriff Lindsay Kooner said: “You’re a young man with no record.
“Although the proportion of alcohol in your breath was significant.”
Sheriff Kooner disqualified Jack from driving for 27 months, reduced to 18 months given his guilty plea at the first calling of the case.
Sheriff Kooner also imposed a £330 fine with a £20 victim surcharge to be paid at the rate of £40 per month.
