Young dancers have been kept on their tippy toes through virtual lessons

Young dancers are still being kept on their tippy toes through virtual dance lessons.

Dance classes are held on the App "Zoom" so children from the Katie Wright School of Dance, in Kimberley, can keep dancing.

"They can see all their friends," says school principle Katie Stewart. "We are trying to keep the same timetable to give them some normality".

On Saturday, April 11, Katie organised an event to make up for six girls not going on their trip of a lifetime to dance in Portugal.

The group were due to represent England - and were over the moon to qualify earlier this year.

But the competition was postponed due to the current global pandemic.

Those who were going were: Lily Yates, 14, of Lowdham; Ruby Peare, 10, of Nuthall; Heidi Fletcher-Smith, 15, and her sister, Leila Fletcher-Smith, 14, from Nuthall; Amie Donovan, 15, from Sherwood and Hannah Smith, 15, from Watnall.

They are pictured when Nottinghamshire Live covered their story in January.

But all was not lost.

Katie decided to organise a competition from the homes of students instead. The move lifted not only the children's spirits but those of the parents too.

Katie says: "We decided to run a virtual dance competition named "KWSD" (Katie Wright School of Dance) and opened this to all of our school.

"The girls performed their solos live via Zoom. We had adjudicators on the call, who then announced their places.

"We had over 60 children take part, with our spectators watching in on the call, so we had 100 people on the call.

"It was a huge success. It was such a joyous event, enabling the children to continue to perform live, family and friends to watch, and really gave us all a huge lift.

"It was a day where we weren’t thinking about the current situation. The children decorated their houses with rainbows, so whilst they were performing, we were remembering the fantastic work being done by our key workers and we tried to incorporate this into the day as much as possible.

"It is a shame our girls can’t go to Portugal, when originally planned, but hopefully can make the new date once all is confirmed and, for now, keeping the whole school dancing to give a sense of routine and normality."
