Young dad who popped out for rice with Nando's walks away in shock after car overturns

A young father fled the scene of a car accident in Liverpool, leaving BBC Ambulance viewers stunned.

The popular series follows ambulance services in the city and tonight's episode centred on the weekend shift, with 45 ambulance crews standing ready to help the people of Merseyside.

The first job of the night took Chelsey and Paul to work as a backup crew for advanced paramedic Rob, who was at the scene of a road traffic accident - a car had overturned at a roundabout and the driver had fled the scene.

A witness told ambulance staff the man "was in shock" and simply got up from the wreckage and walked away.

But before long, the driver returned and became their patient.

Chelsey said she had never seen anyone walk away from a car in such a state of damage.

Both Paul and Chelsey assessed the driver who had originally fled the scene.

The young man had ventured out in his car to buy rice from his local chip shop to accompany a Nando's takeaway.

He admitted to have been drinking while Chelsey and Paul carried on with the job in hand.

They spent 30 minutes with the driver before deciding he hadn't suffered any serious injuries.

The man was then required to answer questions from the police.

The father said he had a baby girl, aged 13 months, as his girlfriend wept at the sight of the pram in the upturned car.

Police required him to take a breathalyser test which he was initially hesitant to do and very anxious about his result.

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the alcohol limit for drivers is 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, or 107 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of urine.

The driver was under the limit so did not get arrested.

He was clearly relieved and spoke of his young daughter, promising police he would never "do that again".

Viewers shared their thoughts on Twitter.

One viewer said: "Turn a car on its roof and run off?"

Another added: "In shock? Let's see."

Liam commented: "God, did I see a baby’s bottle then?"
