Young dad was killed after crashing into baby cow, fatal accident inquiry hears

A young farmhand was thrown from a speeding quad bike and suffered fatal injuries after crashing into a baby cow.

Dad Ian Pollock was using the vehicle to herd a mother and its newborn calf back to a dairy shed on Kilhenzie Farm, near Dailly Road, Maybole, in May 2018.

The 25-year-old had stopped to speak to his girlfriend, Shelby Harkness, who was on the track road, before driving off “at speed” towards his colleague and the two animals.

A fatal accident inquiry heard how fellow farm worker James McGill stepped on to the verge to allow the quad bike to pass but that the tiny calf suddenly “darted” out into the road.

Ian, nicknamed Onion, was thrown from the bike in the collision.

Emergency services attended and Iain was taken to Ayr Hospital but died a short time later.

He had one young son, also named Ian.

Shortly after his death, Ian’s girlfriend Shelby organised a fundraising page on Just Giving to help pay for his funeral costs.

On the page Shelby said everyone was devastated by Ian’s death.

A celebration of Ian’s life took place at The Carrick Centre in Maybole.

He was then laid to rest at the town’s cemetery.
