Young country diary: I couldn’t believe my eyes – a white deer

I live on a farm. We have cows, we have sheep, we have chickens, and we have dogs and a rabbit. And in the woods, we have some deer. One day I was in my dad’s Land Rover and we were driving around the fields to check the sheep, and we saw a head pop out of the trees. At first I didn’t recognise it.

As we got closer, we saw it was a deer with a white face and white body. My dad said it was a white hart. He told me how rare it was to see one. I realised that I had just seen something that most people don’t get to see in their lives. The sight was so beautiful. It was just standing there, completely still, with beautiful long antlers sticking out of its head.

I’ve got to see it more recently. I think it lives in our woods, and I hope it lives there for a long time. It’s always alone. Maybe it doesn’t have much family. I’d like to see it up close and look into its eyes. It is quite shy, though, so every time we see it, it jumps high over the fence and into the woods.
