Young child rushed to hospital with 'major trauma injuries' after being hit by car at busy Liverpool junction

A young child was taken to hospital with what were described as "major trauma injuries" after being hit by a car on a busy road this afternoon.

Emergency services crews were scrambled to the scene in Toxteth at around 3.05pm, with officers from Merseyside Police and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service in attendance.

The incident happened at the junction of Upper Parliament Street and Tunnel Road and road closures were put in place on Lodge Lane, Buttermere Street, Beaumont Street and Kingsley Road.

The child, who was described as under five years of age, was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital by ambulance. It is not clear at this stage whether the child is a boy or a girl.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said they received "lots and lots of calls" about it as it was in such a busy location.

Police cordoned off the junction, which links Smithdown Road, Lodge Lane, Tunnel Lane and Upper Parliament Street, and two traffic diversions were put in place.

Rows of double decker buses were also stopped and became stuck inside the cordon while officers worked at the scene.

Officers could be seen inspecting a black Kia Rio inside the cordoned off area, with Merseyside Police confirming the vehicle was involved in the incident.

A spokesman for the police force confirmed officers were called out to the scene at around 3.05pm, with officers diverting traffic away from the large area which remained cordoned off for around two hours.

By 5pm, Upper Parliament Street had been re-opened.
