Young child and mum killed after crash between tractor and quad bike in Northern Ireland

A woman and child have died and a second child is fighting for her life after a road crash between a quad bike and a tractor in Northern Ireland.

It is understood those killed in the collision in Ballycastle in County Antrim were a mother and her daughter, with the woman named locally as Claire Smyth, in her 30s, reports The Belfast Telegraph.

Another child was injured in the collision on the Whitepark Road and airlifted to Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast in a critical condition, according to the Mirror.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received an emergency call at 4.46pm on Tuesday (May 12).

It dispatched two rapid response paramedics, three emergency crews, one doctor and two ambulance officers to the incident.

The crash is understood to have taken place on the edge of Ballycastle town on the road towards Ballintoy and the Giant's Causeway.

A spokesperson for the NIAS said: "NIAS dispatched two Rapid Response Paramedics, three emergency crews, one doctor and two ambulance officers to the incident.

"The PSNI and Coastguard also assisted in the incident.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was transported to Causeway hospital initially before being transferred onwards to Belfast by coastguard helicopter with a HEMS crew on board."

North Antrim MLA Jim Allister said: "Reports tonight of a double family fatality in a traffic accident in the north of my constituency are distressing.

"While further details are awaited it is clear a local family has been plunged into deep mourning."

Sinn Féin councillor Cara McShane said news of the collision had 'left people reeling', the BBC reports.

"The community is shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic accident just one mile outside of the town," she added.

Police had closed the road on Tuesday afternoon.
