Young cheerleaders from Consett head to Florida to compete in world's largest cheer competition

This young group of cheerleaders aged between 10 and 18 will be representing the North East on the world stage in Orlando, Florida.

The Cheerleading Worlds 2022 Competition in America, is one of the most prestigious events and the team from Consett will be flying from the UK to America this Saturday for the big day on Thursday, April 28.

The training for the big event at the Derwent Valley Allstar Cheerleading Club started in 2019 but due to the disruptions of coronavirus, many things had to be put on hold. Coach Jaz Newton said: "We continued the training through Zoom, it wasn't easy, especially during the lockdowns but it didn’t stop our successful team. Last year in July we came second in Bournemouth. It is such an accomplishment for us.

“It’s very exciting, and completely nerve-racking as the cheerleaders will be performing on such a high standard stage. We’re experiencing a first by going to Florida, we will be flying this Saturday, and next Thursday will be the semi-finals and Friday the finals. Whatever the result, even this experience is a big achievement.”

The cheerleaders have done ‘intense’ training in the build-up to the summit. Erin Munn, 18, said: “All athletes and coaches have proven their hard work and dedication to the sport over these past few months and I’m so excited to experience this incredible opportunity as both a coach and an athlete.”

Jess Lackenby, 14, one of the cheerleaders said: “I am beyond excited to go to the summit, ever since I started to cheer it has always been my dream and now I get to finally achieve it. All the hard work and hours of training we have put in will be worth it.”

Another cheerleader Eve Campbell, 11, added: “I can’t explain how excited I am about going to the summit and spending it with the best coaches, my best friends, and family. The positivity in the gym when we’re training is the best it has ever been can’t wait to get on the summit floor and smash it.”

Elle Greer, 15 has been cheering at DVA for nine years now, said: “I’m going to submit to compete at the biggest competition of my life, achieving my biggest dream with them, I literally couldn’t be more excited! Training has been a long process but it’s all amounted to this and it’s all been worth it. We’ve all come together as a team and there is no one else I would want to do this with.”

Proud parent Clare Lackenby said: “To receive a bid to Summit is an amazing achievement, the girls have worked so hard for this. We’re super proud of them and can’t wait to see them shine on the competition floor.”
