Young Canberra couple win $20 million

A young Belconnen couple initially ignored the phone call that was being made to tell them they were $20 million richer. They were too busy still working from home during lockdown.

The couple, aged in their 30s, held the only division one winning entry in Thursday's Powerball draw.

They take home the division one prize of $20,507,103.16.

They received a call from The Lott late on Thursday evening but didn't answer it straight away.

"Oh my God," the winning man reportedly exclaimed while his wife screamed in the background.

"I saw I had two missed calls, and I thought, 'Who's calling me at this time?'.

"I thought, 'I'm not answering this. They're probably ringing with bad news'. I'm glad I answered now.

"We were literally still working when you called."

In addition to winning the division one jackpot of $20,507,103.16, the couple's PowerHit entry also scored division two 19 times, bolstering their total windfall to $20,852,900.31.

Their winning PowerHit QuickPick entry was purchased online at thelott.com

"I don't buy lottery tickets that often, but lately we've been like, 'Let's just do it. Who knows?'," the man said.

The winning numbers were 12 ,14, 17, 25, 28, 4, 5 and 10.

"No jokes, two nights ago, I was lying in bed, and these numbers pop into my head randomly. I bought a ticket into Set for Life using those numbers. But while I was getting that, I just thought I'd throw in a PowerHit entry as Powerball had $20 million. You've got to be in it to win it."

The couple had often fantasised about what they'd do if they ever won the big one and now looked forward to making some of those long-held dreams a reality.

"This is just going to mean a lot for the whole family," the winning man said.

"I want to help my parents and siblings. I want to buy a house for our young family. It's going to make a world of difference."

Canberra has had a lot of luck recently in lottery wins.

A Canberrra woman won more than $10 million in June soon after a Canberra dad won more than $1 million.
