Young boy's dream to come true after a terrifying few years

A young boy's dream will soon be coming true after a gruelling few years.

Keira and Tony Johnson, from Lydiate, took baby Max to Ormskirk Hospital after he began to vomit and his eyes started rolling into the back of his head. Having been told he had a viral infection, the family returned two days later when mum Keira "knew something else was wrong".

The ECHO previously reported that according to doctors it was the decision to take her son back on October 3, 2017, that saved his life. He was eventually diagnosed with a rare brain tumour called an ependymoma, which is a cancer mostly seen in children.

Due to an excessive brain fluid build up, within days of being diagnosed Max deteriorated extremely fast. He began gruelling treatment which included chemotherapy and the tumour has also been removed four times since the little boy's diagnosis.

But good news finally came when last year, Max's MRI scan came back as "clear". Now the relieved family wanted to carry out one of Max's big wishes.

With the incredible community support to help make this possible, the family are planning to head to Disney Cars Land - something he has been wanting for some time. Mum Keira told the ECHO: "He finished radiotherapy back in November and after Christmas went back to school.

"We had a couple of regular scans come back clear which was a relief and we started taking him to oxygen therapy outside of the hospital, which he started doing in July. But he had a recent MRI which was last Thursday and that too came back clear.

"I couldn't believe it. I didn't have good feeling at all. There were little signs like his balance was off and he was tired and I was getting all worked up but he was probably tired because of the summer holidays, I just couldn't help thinking the worst.

"He's been asking for ages can he go to Disney Cars Land because he's obsessed with cars and there's a big one in California. We had tickets from Radio City to raise money for him so we said we'd put that towards the trip because it's a lot of money.

"There's a local pub near us, the Running Horses, they've been doing so much to raise money for him, all the staff are behind him they've been incredible. So money they've raised will be going towards that too. When his scan came back clear, we've only got until December until his next scan so we just thought we would make his dream come true.

"We only really have such a short time to make these wishes for him and raise money for him. He's so excited, he keeps saying when are we going to America."

The family set up a social media page called Find a Cure for Mighty Max to share the brave youngster's story and to raise funds for alternative treatment. The community immediately rallied behind the fundraiser, which has gone towards helping Max for private consultations and supplements, and now the Disney trip.

Sharing the good news on their Facebook Page, the family wrote: "Two words.... CLEAR SCAN. I cannot explain how relieved we are to get these results today. I have had the most horrendous anxiety these past few days, I had such a bad feeling and felt physically sick.

"I was not prepared for this, these are happy tears (for a change). Mighty Max strikes again. Disney Cars Land here we come."

The ECHO previously reported that Max's oncologist found out the boy's tumour had been recategorised as an Ependymoma PFA with a gene mutation in the BCORL1-ELF4 fusion. The family were told by medics that there is a 20% cure for Max's condition and they began a searching for a cure. More information and updates can be found HERE.
