The 11-year-old was pulled from the water at the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park in Stonehouse on Saturday afternoon.

He was said to have been playing with friends at the time of the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4.30pm but Police Scotland has said the boy died at the scene.

Although he is yet to be formally identified, Police Scotland has confirmed that the family of an 11-year-old boy has been informed of the death - reports the Daily Record.

He added: “A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Locals told how emergency services descended on the park moments after tragedy struck.

One said: “It’s an absolute tragedy. The boy was with friends when he fell into the river. He was so young - it’s tragic.”

Another said: “I saw all the emergency services speeding down the road and knew something awful had happened. The poor family, it’s terrible.”
