Young boy dies in Stonehouse drowning tragedy

A young boy has died in a river in Stonehouse, police have confirmed.

The 11-year-old was pulled from the water at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park yesterday afternoon.

He was said to have been playing with friends when he got into difficulty.

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4.30pm but Police Scotland said the youngster died at the scene.

Although he has yet to be formally identified, police confirmed that the family of an 11-year-old boy has been informed of the death.

A spokesman for the force said: “Police were called around 4.30pm on Saturday following the report of a concern for a person in the water at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Park in Stonehouse.

“Emergency services attended and a male youth was recovered from water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

He added: “A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Local residents told how emergency services descended on the park moments after tragedy struck.

One said: “It’s an absolute tragedy. The boy was with friends when he fell into the river. He was so young - it’s tragic.”

Another said: “I saw all the emergency services speeding down the road and knew something awful had happened. The poor family, it’s terrible.”
