A 10 year-old boy has died after being attacked by a dog at a holiday park in Cornwall
Police said they were called to a caravan at Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe shortly after 5am.
The boy, who has not been named, was found in an unresponsive state and was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services.
Officers launched a search for the dog, believed to be a bulldog-type breed, and shortly after 8am arrested a 28-year-old woman in Saltash.
“Following this incident, searches were undertaken to locate the dog and its owner,” the Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement.
“Police arrested a 28-year-old woman in Saltash just after 8am this morning on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control and manslaughter.
“The dog was also located which has since been transferred to kennels. Enquiries continue."
The boy’s family are aware of the incident and are being supported by officers, the force added.
Members of the public paid tribute to the boy on the police Facebook post about the death.
Tencreek Holiday Park describes itself as “the number one choice for great value touring, camping and caravan holidays” near Looe on the south coast of Cornwall.
The fishing town Looe is a well known tourist location because of its sandy beaches. It is also home to the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain.
"It is with profound sadness that Tencreek Holiday Park management can confirm that emergency services were called to an incident in a static caravan just before 5am on Saturday April 13," Henry Joce, a spokesman for the holiday park, said.
"Tragically, a 10-year-old child was pronounced deceased at the scene after being attacked by a dog present in the same caravan.
"Clearly our thoughts are very much with the family involved - they have our deepest sympathies."
"Tencreek Holiday Park management continues to help police with their inquiries."
The park will remain open as normal, the spokesperson added.
