Young boxer Brandon Murray makes winning return

Hamilton boxer Brandon Murray has set his sights on Scottish and Western District championships, as he bids the make a name for himself in the sport.

The 14-year-old doesn’t have a title to his name yet, but is already impressing, having made the transition from kickboxing.

Murray did well at a recent Springhill Amateur Boxing Club home show at the Bon Accord Club in Shotts, where he unanimously defeated Greenock fighter Luc McCavanagh, who is current Scottish and Western District champion.

Mum Vicky said: “Brandon is back boxing again. He hasn’t got any titles yet, but is doing well.

“His original opponent pulled out the week before and that changed Brandon’s preparations, because the new guy was a ‘southpaw’, so that meant a different strategy.

“That didn’t faze him, he was totally relaxed, typical Brandon, and he did the business.

“Boxing Scotland judges gave him the Boxer of the Night award and he won his fight unanimously, with all five judges giving it to him, which was great.

“It was good for him to get back into the ring. The big competitions are after Christmas, so we’re gearing up for the Western District and the Scottish.

“Brandon wants to make a name for himself and make his mark, so these competitions are important.”
