Young Ayrshire goalkeeper helps 'save' Christmas with heartwarming idea to help struggling families

A young Ayrshire goalkeeper has helped save Christmas for struggling families.

Gregor McKenzie, nine, from Ayr has coined it for charity after saving 100 penalties during a tense shootout.

The Ayr United-daft shot-stopper, who wants to be like his Bayern Munich idol Manuel Neuer, put his gloves on for a good cause arranging his own fundraiser last month.

And the primary 5 Alloway primary pupil faced up to friends, family and teammates from his team Cambusdoon FC 2012s.

In total he had 164 shots fired at his net including one from his six-year-old sister Imogen.

His century of saves have so far helped raise just over £900 for the Night Before Christmas Campaign — a charity which helps less fortunate families and is busy ensuring no child goes without this Christmas.

Proud parents Ann McKenzie, 41, and dad Gavin McKenzie, 42, have both heaped praise on their son.

Mum Ann told Ayrshire Live: “We are so proud of him, he has literally helped save Christmas.

“Gregor has always thought about others, the whole thing was his idea.

“He was inspired by his classmate Charlie who took on a basketball challenge last year for the same charity.

“He’s obsessed with football, he's a big Newcastle United and Ayr United fan.

“He dreams of being like Manuel Neuer but when you look at his dad I don’t think he’s got the genetics to be as tall, but he can certainly leap!

“He just wanted to use his passion for football to do something good, so we roped in some of his friends and teammates.

“It took him 164 shots before he hit the 100, on his 163rd someone missed and we said that’s 100, but he said he wanted one more as it's got to be a save.”

Off the field Gregor continued to help the charity by helping to pack up gifts as he was able to see where the funds raised will go.

Karen Watson from the Night Before Christmas Campaign said: "Thank you so much to Gregor for this amazing fundraising challenge.

"It's wonderful to see young kids taking up challenges like this to help others less fortunate."

Gregor's fundraiser is still open, you can donate here.
