YouGov poll suggests the North East seats the Conservatives could win in general election

Former Labour Prime Minister Tony Blair's old seat of Sedgefield is set to be lost to the Conservatives in Thursday's general election, a major new poll has found.

It would be one of a number of former Labour seats in the North East that could fall to the Tories, a survey by YouGov for the Times has found.

Others include Bishop Auckland, Darlington and Stockton South.

But the poll found that the nationwide Tory lead over Labour has fallen - and the election could go either way.

The most likely outcome is still a Conservative majority, giving Tory leader Boris Johnson a clear mandate to carry on as Prime Minister.

Conservatives are probably on course to win 339 seats, Labour 231, the Lib Dems 15 and the SNP 41. This would give Mr Johnson a majority of 28.

But the poll found the range of possible outcomes stretches from 367 Tory seats to only 311 - which would mean a hung Parliament. This could lead to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn becoming Prime Minister, possibly with help from smaller parties.

Anthony Wells, YouGov’s director of political research, said: "Based on the model we cannot rule out a hung parliament."

A similar poll was published on November 27 and it found a larger Conservative majority was likely. In other words, it appears that Labour has closed some of the gap as the election campaign continued.

Using more than 100,000 interviews over the past week YouGov modelled voting preferences based on age, gender, education, previous votes and other factors, along with local political circumstances.

This is known as a multilevel regression and post-stratification (MRP) model, and it accurately predicted the outcome of the 2017 general election.
