You will no longer be able to buy a new petrol or diesel car in 15 years

Motorists will no longer be able to buy a new petrol car in just 15 years' time under new government plans.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed bringing forward a ban on selling new petrol, diesel or hybrid cars in the UK - from 2040 to 2035.

Climate scientists have said 2040 would be too late if the UK wants to achieve its target of emitting virtually zero carbon by 2050.

The policy will be outlined today (February 4) at an event to launch a United Nations climate summit, which will be held in Glasgow later this year in November.

Once the ban comes into effect, people will only be able to buy electric or hydrogen vehicles.

What is the Bristol Clean Air Zone

According to the BBC, Mr Johnson is expected to say: “Hosting COP26 is an important opportunity for the UK and nations across the globe to step up in the fight against climate change.

“As we set out our plans to hit our ambitious 2050 net zero target across this year, so we shall urge others to join us in pledging net zero emissions.

“There can be no greater responsibility than protecting our planet, and no mission that a global Britain is prouder to serve."

The proposal follows Bristol City Council's own plan for an inner-city diesel car ban and wider clean air zone.

The authority declared a climate emergency back in 2018 and pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030.
