Five years on from making his Manchester United debut, Marcus Rashford has been reminiscing on an unforgettable night.
As United prepare for another Europa League clash, against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, it was on February 25, 2016 when Rashford first pulled on the famous red jersey against FC Midtjylland.
The then-18-year-old was drafted in to the starting XI for the Round of 32 second leg match at the last moment following an injury to Anthony Martial in the warm up.
United were 2-1 down on aggregate after a shock defeat in Denmark in the first leg, but eventually ran out 6-3 winners after a dominating 5-1 victory in Manchester.
It was Rashford who stole the headlines, though, as he scored two goals in his first professional game, with the brace coming within 12 minutes in the second-half.
After firing in the first of his 85 goals for the club so far, Rashford ran towards the fans in the corner to celebrate with academy teammate Dean Henderson.
The goalkeeper has now joined Rashford in the first-team squad and the pair looked back on the special night together.
“You were in the crowd,” Rashford told United's official website, when asked by Henderson about his memories of the game. “The Academy get particular seats and they'd just moved you. They used to be high up, the tickets, but not long after I started training with the first team the seats moved to the Family Stand.
“I just knew that there were people there and as I was running I just saw you and you grabbed me! [Laughs] Great memories. That’s probably the bit I remember the most. I remember the goals and stuff and how they happened, but other than that I don’t really remember the game itself. I just remember certain moments.”
Henderson then added his own recollection from the night: “Growing up with you for the last few years and seeing you come onto the pitch was just great.
“I had a huge amount of pride seeing you on there and when the ball fell to you and you hit it, I was just buzzing. And for the second goal you ran straight to the same place; it was fantastic. We spoke about it the next day and I was still buzzing and I wanted to know what it was like to play out there.”
Rashford added: “It’s because we’ve watched so many games there and that’s all you’re doing: wondering what it’s like to be on the pitch.”
