"You've been stabbed in the lung" - Disturbing video shows the violent reality of knife crime on our streets

This footage brings home the shocking reality of knife crime on our streets.

It was recorded in the early hours of Friday morning in Manchester city centre - minutes after a man was stabbed.

The victim can be seen in the video holding up his shirt, showing off the knife wound to his chest, which is just inches from his heart and lungs.

He can be heard telling witnesses that he has been stabbed once in the front and once in the back, as they plead with him to sit down and wait for medical treatment.

One man repeatedly shouts: 'you've been stabbed in the lung'.

GMP confirmed the 41-year-old was taken to hospital.

His injuries, thankfully, were not life-threatening.

The incident happened on Piccadilly, near to Gregg's and Spar, at around 1.45am.

Police officers can be seen in the footage with their Tasers drawn, as the pavement descends into chaos.

One man is pinned to the ground and handcuffed, while a woman can be seen in the background being suddenly pushed up against a wall by an officer, before she too is placed in handcuffs.

Another man falls backwards onto the pavement and the contents of his bag smash and spill onto the ground.

He was detained by police, but the Manchester Evening News understands he was later released.

The drama came just days ahead of the start of the Conservative Party Conference, which is at Manchester Central from September 29-October 2.

GMP confirmed in a statement that two people - a man and a woman - had been arrested.

They were originally called to Oldham Street, before the incident moved further down towards Piccadilly Station.

"A man aged 41 was taken to hospital with stab wounds that are not believed to be life threatening.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

The Manchester Evening News recently reported how knife crime in the region had almost doubled in three years - with massive spikes in both Manchester and Tameside.

A report which went before councillors showed a 90pc rise in crimes involving blades, with teenagers now accounting for a greater proportion of offenders than before.
