You've been making popcorn wrong all your life according to the small print on packages

The small print on microwave popcorn packaging suggests that popcorn lovers may have been making the snack wrong for years

If you’re a fan of bagged microwave popcorn you’ll be familiar with the awful smell of burnt popcorn or the disappointment of uneven butter distribution and unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag.

If you are used to popping the bag into the microwave for three minutes and crossing your fingers for good results, you may need to take a look at the small print next time you go for a popcorn snack.

According to a post by Facebook page Aldi Mums, the small print on the popcorn bag suggests preheating the microwave.

This could be a game changer! (Facebook)

“For best results, preheat the microwave oven by heating a cup of water for one minute on high. Remove the cup of water before popping corn.”

Many page members were shocked to find out that preheating your microwave was even possible.

"I never even knew there was such a thing as preheating a microwave oven?," said one.

Raising the humidity levels in your microwave works to keep the popcorn fluffy and pop evenly according to other food hack websites .

And as for whether the trick actually works to ensure better popcorn, one said: “Yes and it actually works! All the kernels popped and the butter melted over all the popcorn."

Others were a bit more skeptical, and some even said they didn’t notice a difference. But the trick is certainly worth a shot if you’re sick of seeing unpopped kernels rolling around your popcorn bowl.

More handy tips can be spotted if popcorn lovers squint at the small print - "Shake bag before opening for even salt distribution."
