'You really wonder' - Newcastle United star questions why Ivan Toney was sold by the club

Freddie Woodman has questioned how Ivan Toney was allowed to leave Newcastle United.

The Magpies goalkeeper, who has spent the last couple of seasons out on loan at Swansea, faces Toney, now at Brentford, in the Championship play-off final later today.

Toney has hit 31 goals in the league - a new record - and grabbed one in the play-off semi-final against Bournemouth.

Like some Newcastle fans, there's a disbelief that the club agreed to sell him to Peterborough in 2018.

His tally of 40 goals in just two seasons saw a move to Brentford come around and that record tally of 31 followed.

Woodman, who will return to Newcastle this summer demanding answers about his future, still can't understand Toney's exit.

"I know Ivan, we both played at Newcastle together," he told The Times.

"He's a fantastic striker.

"I knew he was very good back then when we were playing in the under 23s.

"You look at him now and you really wonder how Newcastle managed to let him go.

"He's had a brilliant season, I'm excited to come up against him and a very impressive Brentford side - it's a big challenge."
