You're washing your hair too often - and could be making it 'lifeless and dry'

How many times a week do you wash your hair? Many of us will bust out the shampoo every single day, and some will leave it for every other day, but did you know that in both cases you're washing your hair far too often?

Everyone's haircare routine will be different depending on their hair type, but according to the experts, most people should only ever wash their locks when it looks "visibly oily" - which usually equates to once or twice a week.

And washing your hair more times than is necessary could be doing more harm than good, as it could leave your hair looking "lifeless and dry". Several haircare gurus have shared their tips with Express.co.uk, and have said it's never a good idea to overwash your hair - as you're most likely stripping it of the essential oils it needs to be healthy.

Saul Meskin, hair maintenance expert at Foxy Locks said: "Your hair is connected to your scalp by a follicle and this follicle is connected to glands that produce vitamins and moisture, which gets passed into the hair.

"If you wash your hair too often, you'll wash out all the natural oils in your hair that the glands are producing, meaning they will no longer be passing on any goodness to your hair, leaving it lifeless and dry."

To keep your hair as healthy as possible, celebrity hairdresser Jon Hala advises you only to break out the shampoo when your hair is "visibly oily".

He stated: "You should only wash your hair when it’s absolutely necessary.

"Although the general recommendation is to wash it a maximum of one to two times a week, I’d say that it should only be washed when the hair is visibly oily. If the scalp is itchy or there are signs of flakiness due to dirt, then it’s clear it’s time for a wash.

"Remember, for a healthy scalp you need natural sebum for healthy follicles and washing your hair too regularly will reduce this."

And if you're guilty of washing your hair too often, what's the best way to cut back on washes? Hair expert Simone Thomas at Simone Thomas Wellness claims that you can either go all in and cut back straight away, or you can make gradual changes to your routine until you've reached your goal.

She also advocated for using dry shampoo if you feel your hair is too greasy ahead of wash day.

"You can go for an all-or-nothing approach, but as with so many things in life, if you can make gradual changes, you will get into a new, healthy habit that your hair will thank you for," she stated.

"If you are washing daily, try to go for every other day, with the intention of washing your hair two to three times a week in the long run. If you are self-conscious about your hair in between washes, there are some great dry shampoos out there which will absorb excess oil from your scalp and will add volume to your hair if it’s looking and feeling lank and greasy."
