You’re hired: reporter who started as an apprentice is made a Freeman

Evening Standard journalist Abbianca Makoni has been made a freeman of the City of London livery company for media.

Abbianca received the honour on the completion of her editorial apprenticeship with the Standard. During her two years’ training she supported the Worshipful Company of Stationers & Newspaper Makers, including being a panel member for a debate about the future of journalism.

At the Standard she has interviewed senior Met detectives and mothers fighting for justice, investigated the plight of hidden child victims of lockdown and reported on communities who have supported the most vulnerable during the pandemic. She was also part of the Standard team that had an exclusive interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex this month.

The Stationers livery company is partnering the Evening Standard in its journalism apprenticeship scheme which has run for seven years.
