'You'll never hear me say' - Steven Gerrard makes Liverpool and Aston Villa admission

New Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has refused to entertain any suggestion he sees his role at Villa Park as a stepping stone to the Liverpool job.

The former Reds captain and club legend was unveiled as the new Villa boss last week after he spent over three years with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Plenty of the talk surrounding his appointment has focused on his future and the possibility of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

However, Gerrard insists the suggestion he views his new job as a stepping stone is 'unfair'.

"Very unfair. You'll never hear me say its a stepping stone," he said on Thursday ahead of his first match in charge against Brighton.

"I'm really honoured and proud, I'll give this job everything it needs to be a success, I don't think there's anything wrong with having dreams and aspirations.

"Liverpool have a world class coach and if he was to sign a life time deal I would be very happy for them and him."

Gerrard has signed a three-and-a-half year deal, keeping him at Villa Park until June 2025, while Klopp's current contract at Liverpool keeps him at the club until 2024.

The pair will meet at Anfield next month on December 11, as the Villans look to replicate the 7-2 thrashing they inflicted on Liverpool in October last year.

However, Gerrard will need to get his new team into some good form if they're to be in with a chance of getting a result against the Merseyside club.

With five defeats in five, Villa are currently 16th in the Premier League table and some way off the European places they have been targeting for some time.
