'You have just got to give up this mamba', judge tells man caught with the drug

A 50-year-old man was urged to stop using mamba after being twice caught with the drug.

The advice came from a judge sitting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court where Tony Bowler admitted two charges.

He was fined £50 or one day in detention. This was "deemed served" because he had spent a day in custody awaiting the court date.

District Judge Leo Pyle told him: "Stay away from it on your way home.

"You have just got to give up this mamba," he told Bowler who lives on Radford Road.

Rob Keeble, mitigating, described Bowler as "easy pickings" for patrolling police officers.

"They recognised him as a mamba user and searched him," said Mr Keeble, who pointed out that the court summons was sent to an old address. That led to Bowler's arrest and a spell in police cells.

Marianne Connally, prosecuting, said that Bowler was checked on the Old Market Square on August 17.

"He was asked if he had drugs and he volunteered that he had," she said.

On September 2, he was searched and "fully co-operated with the interviewing officers," added Miss Connally.

Bowler told the court he is hoping to go into rehab in "three or four weeks time."
