'You don't see this everyday': Locals' shock as car smashes through Newcastle jewellery shop window

A community is in shock after a car smashed through the window of a Fenham jewellery shop.

Police are investigating the dramatic crash which happened outside Sunny Jewellers on Thursday afternoon.

The store's front has been wrecked, with glass strewn across the street after what witnesses claim was a freak accident.

Several locals claimed a car pulled out of a junction on Tamworth Road too early, resulting in another vehicle crashing into the side.

Both cars "bounced" off each, sending the Seat Leon hurtling through the glass.

Firefighters and paramedics were called, although Northumbria Police believe nobody was seriously injured.

Locals later spoke of hearing a huge bang from their living room as the crash happened on what some claims is becoming an accident hotspot.

"I just got a text off our lass saying have you not heard the commotion," said Stephen Atkinson, who lives about 200ft from the crash site.

"I put my head out and aye, shocking like. You don't see a car smashing into a shop every day do you?"

On Thursday evening, the car was still behind a large police cordon. Behind it was the Premier Store, which was directly over the road from the jewellers.

Besides police staff they were the only people allowed behind the cordon as it remained open - with customers instead entering using a makeshift entrance at the backdoor.

However, staff there revealed there was "panic" as the crash unfolded outside.

"It was a shock - there was a couple of people inside the building including a baby," said a male worker, who asked not to be named.

"There were fittings inside which were falling over, but everyone is ok and that is the important thing."

The cordon is expected to be in place for the "foreseeable future" according to officers at the scene, while Newcastle City Council staff were called with the view of securing the site until the car could be removed.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 3.35pm police received a report of a two vehicle collision on Fenham Road in the Fenham area of Newcastle.

"The collision had resulted in one vehicle colliding with nearby buildings.

"Nobody is reported to have seriously injured and enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances around the collision. Tamworth Road and Fenham Road remain closed at this time and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 651 23/07/20.”

However for some living on the long, narrow streets, Thursday's crash was an accident waiting to happen.

This isn't the first crash around here," said one woman, who didn't want to be named.

"There was a crash there (pointing to the spot directly over the road to the jewellers) and that was probably less than a year ago now.

"The roads are crowded with all the parked cars and not brilliantly designed.

"People just come flying out the junctions and it is hairy."
