'You don’t go into football thinking you’re going to get brain damage' Daughter of Gordon McQueen calls for limits on heading ball

The daughter of Scotland legend Gordon McQueen is calling on football chiefs to limit heading after her dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Hayley McQueen, 41, wants future generations to be better protected now the risks are widely known.

“You don’t go into football thinking you’re going to get brain damage,” she said.

“There are lots of footballers out there now thinking, ‘is it me next?’”

Sky sports broadcaster Hayley said her dad has no regrets about his career as no one knew the risks.

The 68-year-old made almost 350 appearances for St Mirren, Leeds, Manchester United and Scotland from 1970 to 1985.

Heading has now been banned during training for children aged 11 and under in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

But Hayley added: “There needs to be changes in the law – not just at under-11 level, it needs to be right through the professional game.”
