'You could tell straight away it was really, really bad'... two people in hospital after car smashes into bus on major Manchester road

A man and a woman have been taken to hospital after a vehicle being chased by police crashed with a car and a bus.

Officers attempted to stop a Volkswagen Golf on Tarporley Avenue, in Whalley Range, at around 9.55pm on Wednesday night.

When police approached the Golf to speak to the driver the vehicle sped off towards Wilbraham Road.

The vehicle then was involved in a smash with a Ford C Max and a single decker bus.

A 23-year-old man, who was behind the wheel of the Golf, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford, a 47-year-old woman, was also taken to hospital suffering with serious injuries.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A section of Wilbraham Road was sealed off overnight, but it has since re-opened this morning.

Last night a wrecked car could be seen within the police cordon and a large number of GMP vehicles could be seen parked on Wilbraham Road.

Police Sergeant Lee Westhead, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is underway and enquiries are being carried out in the local area.

“We have specialist officers supporting the woman’s family at she receives treatment in hospital.

“The incident has been referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch who have notified the IOPC in line with normal policy.

“We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to get in touch as soon as possible.”

One nearby resident said she heard a loud bang and that there was a very strong smell of burning in the area after the crash at around 10pm.

She said: “I looked out and there was about four or five police cars, an ambulance and the road was taped off. You could tell straight away it was bad.

“Really, really bad. This junction can be bad but I’d say that’s the worst crash I’ve seen here.”

Another woman who lives nearby said: "I got back about 10.30pm and the whole road was taped off. There were two casualties on the floor that paramedics were attending to.

"The passengers were also being led off the bus. It was slap bang in the middle of the crash.

"There were at least 10 people on it. They looked okay as they were walking off but police were checking they were okay and taking their details."

Anyone with information should call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 or 101 quoting incident number 3172 of 23/10/2019, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
