You could see 'Saturn-rise' over Edinburgh tonight as planet arrives in opposition

The celestial highlights just keep on coming this month, with this week bringing your best chance to catch a glimpse of Saturn and its iconic rings.

The so-called "ringed planet" arrived in opposition in the early hours of Monday morning, following neighbouring Jupiter coming into opposition last week on Tuesday.

Opposition occurs when a planet lies on the opposite side of the sky to the Sun during its orbit. When this happens, Earth finds itself directly between an outer planet, such as Saturn, and the Sun.

At opposition, Saturn lies in the constellation of Sagittarius, a whopping 836.6 million miles from Earth, reports Space.com.

A planet in opposition provides some of the best nighttime illuminations in the skies and gives you the perfect chance to catch a glimpse and take some snaps.

Saturn, and its disk and rings, will appear at their largest and brightest from today (20 July) - though you would still need a telescope to make out Saturn's rings.

It will also be visible all night in Edinburgh's skies, as it rises at sunset and sets at sunrise.

According to BBC Sky at Night magazine, the best time to see Saturn was from the early hours of this morning, thought it will be at its brightest throughout the week and even during the rest of the month, reports Forbes.
