You could get a £5,000 fine for driving home on Christmas Day

Drivers are being warned they could face a £5,000 fine and nine points of their license for making a common error as they drive around the festive period.

Many people will be taking to the roads to celebrate Christmas Day with their loved ones, with lots of people playing Christmas songs on the radio to accompany their drive.

But singing along to Mariah Carey and Shakin’ Stevens could lead to a £5,000 fine and nine points if you are deemed to be "driving without due care and attention."

Marmalade, who specialise in insuring young drivers, have created a winter survival guide which lists what drivers should be cautious of this winter and loudly singing to Christmas classics could be classed as careless driving.

According to the Highway Code, drivers need concentration for safe driving and should avoid loud music since it may mask other sounds and cause distractions.

If caught, the motorists are at risk of being charged with “driving without due care and attention” or in some cases even “dangerous driving”.

Commenting on the release of the guide, CEO of Marmalade, Crispin Moger said: "As a new driver, if you are yet to experience winter conditions on the road they can prove to be a bit of a challenge.

"We thought it would be handy for new drivers of the UK to have this guide to hand should they need it. It offers some pearls of wisdom as we head into the winter months.

“New drivers haven't had the best time over the last six months and many will be wanting to experience the freedom of being on the road and making sure that they can do that safely is a real focus for us."

The guide also tells drivers the exact settings you should have your heaters and fans set to in order to easily clear your window, as often it can be difficult to find the right settings, especially with the mornings getting colder.

If your windows are too fogged up when it's cold outside, you could face a £60 fine and £1,000 if driving with the obstruction is deemed to be careless driving.
