A woman said she got shorted a piece of garlic bread after buying a package of Texas Toast.
In a TikTok video with more than 46,000 views, user @doobiedub showed her recent Texas Toast purchase, which included only seven pieces instead of the eight promised on the label. Her New York Bakery Texas Toast contained 12.5 percent less product than advertised.
What is Texas Toast?
Texas Toast typically refers to a thick, buttery slice of bread often served at restaurants across the state. Chains like Raising Cane’s offer their own version on their menus.
Over time, the term has expanded to include frozen supermarket varieties. These thick garlic bread slices are easy to heat at home. They are usually slathered in garlic butter and sometimes topped with cheese, depending on the brand.
Brands such as Pepperidge Farm, Kroger, and New York Bakery sell frozen these slices in individual packages.
Shrinkflation hits Texas Toast. What’s next?
Some commenters blamed shrinkflation, specifically calling out New York Bakery’s version of the bread.
“They’ve already gotten smaller. Now they’re excluding an entire slice,” one TikTok user wrote.
On Reddit, user u/zoercat pointed out a similar discrepancy. “[Texas Toast] used to be over twice the size of these little things,” they said. “We checked the box to make sure we didn’t get a mini version, but it’s just the regular box that we always get. Crazy!”
Another commenter on the same thread added, “The whole idea of Texas toast is that it’s really big. This is ridiculous.”
A reviewer on the New York Bakery website noted the shrinkage years ago. “We’ve been buying this Texas Toast for years. But, unfortunately we’re no longer going to buy anymore. They shrunk the bread down to nothing. I can’t believe how small it is now. Still has [a] great taste, but at a 1/4 the size. Very disappointing.”
What should you do if you don’t receive the correct amount of food in a package?
It’s common to occasionally receive slightly more or less food than expected, especially with frozen products. If that happens, customers can reach out to the company for a refund, replacement or coupon.
In this case, New York Bakery may offer @doobiedub a replacement product or a coupon equal to the 12.5 percent loss in product.
New York Bakery’s customer service hotline is 1-888-208-0797 and is available Monday through Friday.
